Building Nebraska’s Workforce: Key Takeaways from the 2025 Governor’s Summit

Governor's Summit 2025

Nebraska’s future is only as strong as the people who choose to live, work, and build their careers here. At the 2025 Governor’s Summit in Kearney, leaders from across the state came together to tackle one of our biggest challenges—and opportunities: developing a workforce that can power growth for decades to come.

For Boone County, the message was clear: the strategies discussed at the Summit have a direct impact on our ability to attract, retain, and grow talent right here at home.

Investing in the Next Generation of Talent

One exciting addition to this year’s event was the inaugural Youth Summit, designed to connect high school students and recent graduates directly with employers, colleges, and military representatives.

The results were remarkable:

  • 918 meaningful career connections were made
  • Students submitted more than 250 applications for jobs, internships, and scholarships
  • Husker Coach Matt Rhule and current players inspired attendees with personal stories about choosing to build their futures right here in Nebraska

By giving young people direct access to opportunities, Nebraska is planting the seeds for long-term workforce retention.

For Boone County, this reinforces the importance of exposing our own students to local career pathways in ag, manufacturing, healthcare, and small business. Programs like Business & Industry Day can help ensure our young people see Boone County not just as home, but as a place where they can thrive professionally.

Aligning Industry with Workforce Development

Governor Jim Pillen highlighted how Nebraska’s strengths in agriculture, energy, and manufacturing can fuel an emerging bioeconomy. From sustainable aviation fuel to carbon capture, these innovations create not only economic growth but also high-skill, high-wage jobs for Nebraskans.

Boone County is well-positioned for this space. With our strong agricultural base, adding bioeconomy innovation opens the door for value-added ag jobs that can keep families rooted here. Supporting workforce training in these industries ensures our community stays competitive.

A Systems Approach to Workforce & Government Efficiency

Beyond industry and education, the Governor and agency leaders also discussed how government can do its part. A streamlined, efficient government keeps Nebraska competitive and helps ensure that resources are invested wisely in areas that support long-term workforce growth.

For Boone County, this could mean stronger support for local businesses, better partnerships with state agencies, and more opportunities for collaboration on workforce initiatives.

Recognition of Workforce-Driving Partners

The Summit also celebrated institutions that play a critical role in Nebraska’s workforce and economic stability. The Nebraska Veterinary Diagnostic Center at UNL was recognized with the Governor’s Excellence in Ag Partnership Award, showcasing how vital education and research partners are to strengthening our state’s workforce.

Moving Forward: What It Means for Boone County

The message from the Governor’s Summit was clear: Nebraska is committed to building and keeping talent here at home.

For Boone County, that means:

  • Expanding opportunities for students and young workers to connect with local employers
  • Supporting innovation in agriculture and manufacturing that leads to good-paying jobs
  • Building stronger partnerships with state agencies and institutions to grow our workforce
  • Continuing to tell the story that Boone County is not only a great place to live, but also a great place to work and build a future

When talent thrives in Boone County, our entire community thrives.
